Shen loves mixing in African ethnic and world samples in to the mix, it’s no wonder he has such a love for this type of music from spending his childhood in the extremes of Southern Africa’s landscapes absorbing indigenous sounds and immersing himself in the rural rhythms of the Limpopo Province. After moving to Cape Town, and completing a jazz degree at UCT, Shen started his group with musical styles reflecting the diversity of African, rock and dance blended with the fine overtones of Jazz and Western traditions. When the band plays live, they weave each song into another without stopping, flowing from one song to the next, just like a radio station disk jockey would mix music together – hence the name ShenFM. ShenFM has averaged about 22 gigs every month for the last 4 years. From Dubai to Dublin, Namibia to Stockholm, and all over SA. Recently the band received much praise in France and are due back in the next European summer.
The new album release in 2014 will see collaborations with the likes of Vusi Mahlasela, Zolani (Freshly Ground), Dino Moran and Shen’s students from Khayelitsha. Not only have they played with the above mentioned artists, but ShenFM has opened for Prime Circle, Watershed, GoldFish, and Lionel Richie amongst many others.
